Winter is Coming
It's September. Time to do a little winterproofing.
- Check the roof and the chimney for damage, with binoculars.
- Check the gutters, downspouts, and drains are clear.
- Check the smoke alarms. Also the carbon monoxide alarms.
- Check the perimeter for gaps that might allow mice in, and spray perimeter with mint solution.
- Check the draught excluders and the weather stripping on the doors.
- Get some salt in to de-ice the paths.
- Stock up on seed for the wild birds.
- Stock up on dog food and dog treats.
- Stock up on non-perishable food for the humans.
- Clean the water containers.
- Stock up on fuel: wood, coal, central heating oil.
- Stock up on lights: candles, oil lamps, spare lightbulbs. Check the location of the windup torches.
- Stock up on matches, lighters, and firelighters.
- Locate the hot water bottles.
- Locate hats, gloves, socks, boots, and winter coats.
- Change the bedcovers to winter-weight duvets.
- Check the attics for leaks.
- Check the curtains and curtain linings.
- Lay out the rugs in the bedrooms.
- Bleed the radiators and check the reflectors.
- Get the car serviced.
- Check the car's lights are all working.
- Stock the car with a first-aid kit, a torch, a blanket, water and food.
- Check the tyre pressures, including the spare.
- Make sure the breakdown service number is stored on my phone.
